Bakers
Bakers are responsible for all the tasty bread, pastries and similar food items we see in stores. They are trained in the art of mixing ingredients to produce deliciously baked end products. Most of them work in manufacturing settings, such as commercial or retail bakeries. Bakers also work in restaurants, grocery stores and wholesale club stores. They typically work in shifts to ensure baked products are available to customers round the clock.
Fast foods produced by the bakery industry are sometimes considered not ideal for health due to the sorts of ingredients used in their preparation, including unhealthy oil and refined sugars. However, there are many outlets that sell foods made for the health-conscious patrons. The industry has recovered impressively well since the Great Recession of recent memory. In a report by Report Linker, it was observed that demand for both fast foods and healthier food options have gone up. Greater emphasis, however, is now being placed on products made using natural, organic ingredients. Retail bakery operations are greater in number than large commercial operations, but the latter generate the most profit in the industry. The most-demanded products by customers have mainly been bread and rolls.
Bakers mostly acquire their skills through on-the-job training or apprenticeships. Some also do so by attending culinary schools. Employment is forecast to grow by around seven percent in the 10-year period starting from 2014.
