Shoes

Shoes are one of the absolute essentials for humans, especially in modern age. There is always a need to have a pair regardless of how much or little money one has. A shoe as an item of footwear helps to protect the foot from being hurt or made dirty. They also provide a comfy feeling to the feet while we go about our different activities. Shoes have evolved greatly through history. In the past, materials such as wood, canvas and leather were used for making them. But majority is now made using rubber and materials obtained from petrochemicals. The earliest examples of shoes found to date are sandals which date back to around 8000 BC.

Designs of shoes vary considerably through time and between cultures. Function used to be the main focus, but these footwear items have risen to become more of fashion statements. Style elements include use of exotic materials and high heels. There is a wide variety of shoes. Each of these is usually designed for specific purposes. They include athletic shoes (for sports), boots (for work or special activities/conditions), dress shoes, dance shoes and orthopedic shoes.

Shoes have alphanumeric indications which show the size of foot they can fit on. The size is usually measured in terms of length. Diverse systems of measures are used for shoe sizes across the globe. For example, measuring units in America and the UK are about a quarter of an inch, but a unit is around two-thirds of a centimeter in Europe.
