The City and County of Denver is a major city in Colorado, situated in the South Platte River Valley between the High Plains and Front Range of the Rocky Mountains. At an elevation of one mile above sea level, it ranks among the highest major American cities. This elevation earned for it the nickname, "The Mile-High City." Denver has an estimated population in excess of 682,000 and is considered the fastest-growing city in the nation with a 2.8 percent population growth in 2015. Founded in 1858, the city is the capital of Colorado and the state's most populous municipality. It is also the most-populated city within a 500-mile radius in the Mountain West. Its residents are known as Denverites.
