Information about the city of Houston

Number of companies

The fourth largest city in the United States, Houston is located in the proximity of Gulf of Mexico in southeast Texas. It is the most populous city in the state with more than 2.2 million inhabitants based on 2014 census estimate. It is also the largest in the American south, covering about 596 square miles of land. Houston, named after former Republic of Texas president General Sam Houston, is the seat of Harris County.

The population of the city is very diverse, with people of various ethnicity and religions pitching their tents here. It has a large international community which continues to grow in size. Houston is the most diverse of all Texan cities and has also been described as the most diverse city in the country.

In the past, cotton trade was central to the economy of the city, but the “Space City” now depends mostly on energy, aeronautics, manufacturing, transportation and medical industries. Houston is also a major player in the fabrication of oilfield equipment. It is surpassed only by New York in terms of the number of Fortune 500 companies that make their home there. About a third of the jobs in Houston’s metropolitan area are connected to international business. The Port of Houston handles the largest international waterborne tonnage and ranks eighth across the globe.
