Philadelphia

Founded in 1682, Philadelphia is the foremost city in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. It was established by William Penn as capital of the Pennsylvania Colony and given the Greek name "Philadelphia," which means "brotherly love." The name was intended to indicate a place where people can worship freely without fear of being persecuted - Penn himself had been persecuted for being a Quaker. Philadelphia has a special place in the history of America. It was a meeting place for the nation's founding fathers and once served as a temporary U.S. capital.
With a population of over 1.5 million people as of 2014, Philadelphia is the most populous in Pennsylvania. It is also the fifth-most populated in the U.S. The city is the major economic and cultural center for the Delaware Valley metropolitan area, which is the eighth-largest in the country. It is the seat of a county of the same name. Philadelphia is home to seven Fortune 1000 companies. The economy revolves mainly around manufacturing, information technology, financial services, health care, biotechnology and food processing.
Tourism also plays a key role in city economy. Philadelphia is known for its history, arts and culture, with these attracting more than 39 million tourists from within the country in 2013. It is also a major international study destination with numerous colleges and universities.
