Washington

The story of the city of Washington is unlike that of any other city in the United States. Named for America’s prominent founding father George Washington, it was exclusively created as the capital of the United States by the Constitution following the signing of the Residence Act in July, 1790. It is not considered a section of any state, but under the direct jurisdiction of the Congress. The city, which is situated along the Potomac River on the U.S. East Coast, serves as the center for the three branches of the federal government.
Washington has a population of about 672,000, based on July 2015 estimate. On workdays, total city population can rise beyond one million with influx of commuters from neighboring Maryland and Virginia. The city and district form a part of the nation’s sixth largest metropolitan statistical area (Washington metropolitan area) which has more than six million people.
Nicknamed “the District,” Washington is the center of political activities in the United States. It is steeped in a history of political maneuvering and compromise. The nation’s capital hosts about 175 foreign embassies. The headquarters of many organizations (both domestic and international), professional associations and lobbying groups can be found here as well.
The city is culturally diverse, with numerous international cultures on display. It boasts many national monuments and museums. These are mainly located in the vicinity of the National Mall, which is also called the “crown jewel of DC.”
